Here's a recipe (blast from the past blog I used to have) that I used when living on a homestead. Ingredients: 1/2 Onion chopped 2 Medium carrots chopped 2 Celery stalks chopped 2 Cloves garlic chopped 1 Medium Sweet Potato 1 1/2 Cups dried split peas (any color) 14 oz broth 1/2 Tablespoon cumin Sausage, cooked (see notes below)** Salt to taste (Add any other seasonings you like.) Put it all into your pot or slow cooker. If cooking on the stove top, bring to simmer and cook for 45 minutes to 1 hr. If using a slow cooker, cook on low all day or high for half the day. If cooking on the woodstove, cook the same as the slow cooker. **As for the sausage, you can use whatever you like. We don't buy sausage, we make it ourselves using beef and seasonings but you could use breakfast sausage, polish, kielbasa etc. I also used maybe 1/4 lb because we don't eat a lot of meat but you can use any amount you like. This turns into more of a thick stew than a soup but that's how we like it, you can use more broth if you like. This makes 4 very generous helpings. I didn't measure it out, I just went by the bowls we had and what was left over so definitely double it if you are cooking for a hungry family.
