Have you ever run into a person who believes that those who strive to follow Jesus Christ today "do" still need to live by and keep the Old Testament Torah ways? There are such people around today who are from a popular but very deceptive movement called Hebrew Roots and Sabbath Keepers. They seem to love the weekly Sabbath keeping and the joyful emotional festivals but often when examined they are very lacking in their full Torah keeping ways. We have written about this before and we make no excuses for calling it what it is; a false unbiblical theology. In truth... it preys on people's lack of biblical knowledge, their disappointment with denominational religion, their undiscerning nature and by distorting many things found in the Torah writings. Often it is gross scripture twisting and adding/taking away from God's Word and that it is very dangerous! ( See Rev 22:18 ) The HR people are very crafty to say "oh it is not for your salvation you keep Torah; it is to please God you should indeed fully do the Torah ways". We will show you here this is a lie and we will pose questions that no Hebrew Root people have answered for us yet. (NOTE: we are not teaching a person cannot for teaching / liberty purposes gather on a Saturday Sabbath or perform a Passover/feast. We are standing against those who look to burden you by saying you MUST keep today what Christ has lifted from us.) Because we care about those caught in its deception; this post will aim to show you how unbiblical and illogical it is to believe that you are to attempt to keep all that what was given to Israel in God's Old Testament Word. Below you will find over 600 commandments given to Israel by God with the scripture verses by them. We took the time (a whole 10 hour day) to go through them all in the Old Testament and it was an amazing experience for us really. One cannot avoid seeing the weight, detail, magnitude, vastness and burden of God's law that was laid upon those Israelite people. Please take the time to look them up and read through them in the bible, as it will help you to understand what is really involved here. As you do read through them please realize that if you undertake "keeping the Torah" you MUST keep them all or you are breaking all of God's law. James 2:10 says: For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. *Based on that theological point; the first note we would like to make very clear is this. *It is IMPOSSIBLE to keep "ALL" of the Torah Ways today. Many of the commands involved a Temple, sacrifices in Jerusalem, commanded visits to Israel and the Levite priesthood that no longer even exists! If you read through the laws you will see many that are IMPOSSIBLE to keep today in full! This alone should make a person who believes they are to still keep the Torah, stop and pause because they cannot even do what God prescribed in great detail to Israel to keep long ago. We lovingly would ask any Hebrew Root Torah keeper to please explain where in God's Torah Word does it say it is now allowed today to "not keep" ALL of the law for ANY reason? Chapter and verse is needed here please. If you can't keep it all what is your basis for teaching others they should keep it? *Moving on from there the next area we would like to explore is the "hypocritical nature" of those who claim to be "keeping Torah" when they are NOT keeping "all" of the law. Jesus was very harsh on the Pharisees for being hypocrites. (See Matthew 23) If it is to be kept in full we often ask this: "what of it are you really keeping today"? Not one in the Hebrew Roots has yet answered that for us, which is quite telling! They all love the Sabbath, the feasts and wearing tassels but they are often found NOT keeping the full Torah. There are many great examples and just one would be putting your wife out during her monthly period. The law says "she is unclean and will defile you". How many men of the Torah Roots are obediently doing this each month? See #572 Here is the scripture that explains that long and unclean process: And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. 20 And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean. 21 And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. 22 And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. 23 And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even. 24 And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean. 25 And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean. 26 Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation. 27 And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. 28 But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. Leviticus 15:19-28 This is just one command given to Israel. But there are those who believe and teach they are to still live this way today. Are they keeping them all? The evidence thus far is no and so they seem to be hypocrites in the end. The truth is the law was given to show the Israelites how unclean and sinful they were. Christ came and He fulfilled that law for us ( Matthew 5:17 ) and we not longer have that burden upon us (Acts 15) and for that we PRAISE Him daily!!! *There is a popular Hebrew Root ministry out there that I will not name as I don't want to send people to their site. We believe in 1 Thessalonians 5:21 "test everything" and so we decided to test them. They have a very professional website and "seem to be" well meaning but there are issues there that one can see right from the start. Here are some of the issues we found about their teaching methods that are very questionable: 1) They use long videos and give so much information that (often has nothing to do with the topic at hand) and this just confuses people who can't keep up. 2) They use "mind games" by often inferring if question the Torah ways you are like a atheist or a unbeliever and they use visuals to drive home these points over and over. 3) They break both the Torah and New Testament writings by adding or taking away from God's Word (See Deuteronomy and Revelation 22:18 ) 4) They use unreliable sources that are not inspired scripture. 5) They will also try to discredit the New Testament Word whenever they can by saying Paul is confusing to people or by just suggesting the NT word may not be true in full. (Keep in mind that the words Paul spoke are of God so in essence they are really saying that God is confusing or hard to understand.) 6) They are VERY Hebrew Root based to the point they even SELL tassels for $19.95 on their website. (We will show you just how they do these things below from just one video we watched about- Should we stone our children.) *On that subject; we would next like to point out the harshness of the Torah that calls for brutal action against those who violate it. Many Hebrews Roots people say it is just a guide and only important you try your best. It is not a list of hard rules you must keep to in detail. This is NOT what Torah teaches at all folks. We would ask any serious Hebrew Root people if they will come to our area and help us "stone to death" some false teachers, some neighbors that don't keep the Sabbath and some rebellious children who are gluttons / drunks? These are all taught and to be kept "if" you are to hold to ALL of the Torah. (See # 110, 169 and 311) Are you folks who preach Torah keeping really prepared to help in the stoning process? If you're not willing to stone people then can you give us chapter and verse that clearly shows what part of the Torah God now says you don't have to keep anymore? We cannot find that area of scripture. This ministry put out a long video on why they don't stone their rebellious children any longer. In this video they use the very tactics we mentioned as ploys to win you over to Torah Ways. Don't fall for it. In this video they say that we don't stone children any longer as their is no Torah legal system in place anywhere in the world. This is true and so they admit clearly "they cannot keep the law in full". They go on to say that there was a long and drawn out process by which people where put to death for such things. Here they try to complicate matters but what does the text say to us below? Dueteronomy 21: 18-21 says this: If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city. And they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear. Clearly the text says you SHALL do this. Just like the 10 commandments proclaim; this is not a option but a "shall" do. They say in the video that you need two or more witnesses and the leaders to approve of the stoning. This situation clearly shows you have the witnesses ( mom and dad ) and the leaders ( elders ) so it is to be carried out as commanded. The Hebrew Root video says it was a long and drawn out process and was rarely used. In this matter they quote sources that are not reliable and it only blurs the truth. But know this; if they had the system in place that Torah requires ( witnesses and the leaders ) they WOULD stone people today. Ponder that will you as you think about Jesus coming to die and save us by GRACE. Next in the video they move on to the John 8 account of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? 6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. 7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. John 8 They claim it was only a legality that let the woman live; a technicality of the Torah ways and it was not grace. They state there was not the witnesses needed to convict her, the Pharisees were just setting her/Jesus up and lying about the crime to trick Jesus. So Jesus had no choice but to let her go or he was breaking the Torah. Amazingly the HR teacher suggests Jesus "may" have written Deuteronomy 19 in the sand (that chapter is about having 2 witnesses) and he then later he states boldly ..."when Jesus wrote Deuteronomy 19 in the sand". He just added to God's Word by not only inferring Christ wrote Deuteronomy 19 but then states He DID write it. He broke the Torah and Revelation commands by doing this. We have NO proof at all what Jesus wrote in the sand! Sadly his own words in the video convict him. By using the Deuteronomy 19 "witnesses needed" scripture to show Jesus would never break the Torah Ways, he has a big issue! By denying that the woman was set free because "grace has indeed come"; the Hebrew Root teacher needs to answer this: did Jesus break a Torah way by "allowing" the Pharisees to bear false witness against her and not be stoned themselves? Read this scripture: If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; 17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. Deuteronomy 19:16-19 If seems clear to us. If Jesus did not let her go due to "grace has now come" either He let her go free when she should be stoned via Torah law or He let the false witnessing Pharisees go also against Torah law? Jesus states Himself in John 8 you who have no sin cast the first stone. Here we see a change as in the past obviously people were stoned to death by others who had sinned themselves. He then states those who follow me walk in the light and the truth will set you free. (He set the woman free) He is clearly bringing in the NEW covenant here (Matthew 26 ) that is of His blood/death (grace by faith) as no one can keep the law in full. The Hebrew Root teachers are doing what Paul talked about in Hebrews 10.... trampling the grace of Christ under foot. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Also since they're always saying "God doesn't change and the Torah is still in play today", we would also ask them can they explain with chapter and verse what happened to the Levite priesthood, animal sacrifices, men going to Israel three times a year for Festivals and the Temple activities? Please explain to us with chapter and verse why "some" of the Torah law seemed to change/end/go away and why you are allowed to NOT hold to those Torah ways clearly commanded in the Word? (See our articles below that clearly show what was in the OLD did change and was not forever as they claim.) It is our hope we are getting through to some of you that are being temped away into this ill Torah movement. It just gets worse when you examine deeper what the Torah teaches for those who were commanded to live by it. *If you claim to be a Torah keeper you cannot eat any meat from fast food or grocery chains as it very likely has NOT been butchered per the Torah ways. We know first hand the racket that is done with the rabbi's who are supposed to be in charge of that area. (See #157) *They have festivals where "they" deem it is best like Missouri, Florida, Costa Rico or Hawaii and not according to the Torah that says go to Israel. (See # 114) *How many of the Hebrew Root folks have the Torah on their door posts (see #21) or have it hanging on your foreheads (see #19). Those who teach that you must "do" this of the old law and strive on in ways that are impossible to keep fully are a complicating dangerous group indeed. They have a different gospel as they rarely preach the cross of Christ at all but spend all their time on keeping Torah ways. What does the New Testament word teach us to do? Amazingly the Torah Root keepers do an incredible perverted twisting job in their ill theology. Follow us here will you? * They grab onto the grace of Christ for their "own personal salvation" admitting they are sinners ( law breakers ) and need Christ per John 14:6 * They also turn back and hold on to the law for today that per James 2:10 they themselves admit they have broken "all" of the Torah law. (Including adultery/Sabbath breaking.) *They would deny grace and support stoning you today for "missing a Sabbath" (see Exodus 31:14 ) if they had the Torah tools in place to do it. *They admit they have broken "all the law" already and deserve to be stoned themselves ....they cry out for grace! Do you see how convoluted this theology really is when you ponder it and dissect it in great detail? They want grace as fallen law breakers but they are determined to exact the law in detail on others today. But when the law is turned on themselves, they desire His grace! If you mar and attack the grace of Jesus Christ, this is what you get so please don't go there at all. It is a dangerous and slippery slope that will consume you as it has them! The Apostle Paul warned about leaving the simplicity of Christ and we fear this is the Hebrew Root way. But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it! 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 Also please go read Galatians 1 where Paul calls another gospel accursed, twice. Again the Hebrew Roots do not focus on the cross of Christ and so they have another Jesus and another gospel which is indeed accursed. We could go on and on with many more verses. We hope by just listing a few of the Torah ways; it should be easy to see that not only can you NOT keep it all today (as these false teachers are telling you to do) but that very few people with wisdom would even attempt it. With just some bible study you will see the OLD was put in place to make way for the NEW and that is Jesus Christ who has come! While all of this may seem very confusing and frustrating for a person who just desires God's truth, we want to encourage you with the good news and these important biblical points below to ponder and rest in: Christ lived a perfect life and fulfilled the law (Matthew 5:17) Jesus brought us a NEW covenant with His blood (Matthew 26) Jesus said it is finished! (John 19:30) Jesus gave us ALL instruction in 2 great commands (Luke 10:27) Jesus didn't stone the adulterous woman but said "go and sin no more" (John 8) showing grace and the NEW had come! Paul didn't teach us to stone false teachers/rebellious men but to not associate with them (Romans 16:17) showing grace and the NEW had come! The Apostles did NOT teach the gentiles to keep the Torah (Acts15:24) showing the NEW had come! The Apostle Paul (speaking for Christ) said the Torah was ready to wax away and a NEW and BETTER covenant had come! (Hebrews 7 and 8) You need to study God's Word in context and see that these Torah laws were NOT given to anyone but to the nation of Israel. We believers today indeed are bound by the moral law of God and that is echoed in the NEW writings for us to follow. We today CANNOT keep the Torah! We are to read / understand the Torah and mainly how it was all about the coming of Our Lord! All of the 10 commands are clearly taught in the New Testament teachings for us except Sabbath keeping (Christ is now our rest. See Hebrews 4) There is so much more that could be said but for this article we shall close with these thoughts. Don't let those who seem to like to "dabble" in weekly Sabbath keeping and joyful festivals deceive you into attempting what you can never fully do; which is to keep ALL of the Torah Ways. God has called us to the NEW covenant written in the blood of Jesus Christ. The entire Old and New writings were about and point to Him so why be distracted to a focus on the old? There are so many biblical teachings and godly characteristics of a obedient New covenant Christ follower that the Hebrew Root folks we have met don't care about or practice today (holiness, biblical dress, head covering, obedience, separation from the fallen world) and they will NEVER teach it to you either as they are set on the shadows of the old. (The Hebrew Root ministries don't teach these either ) See our 10 point test CLICK HERE to help you: We have other detailed articles that expose Hebrew Root theology so please go read/listen to them click HERE to read Is Sabbath Keeping For Today. And click HERE to read Refuting Hebrew Roots Theology We as Christians need to be striving today for what we can do in Christ and not playing in the shadows (the Torah) of the old ways once given to Israel. We non Israelites are called out to be the New Testament church, we are not now and never were the nation of Israel. (There is a difference.) Having said that: we do also stand against man made denominational religion today as it is false. You can go and read all about that, click HERE. We pray you will walk in His spirit and truth (John 4:24) lest any man spoil you through mans vain ways (Colossians 2:8) Please listen (click HERE) to the gospel to gain eternal life to come.
